Daytime operations at Schiphol tested with iCAS

Important steps have once again been taken in the development of iCAS, LVNL's new air traffic control system. In October, test days were held during which iCAS was tested using, among other things, actual flight plans from day-to-day operations at Schiphol.

What was tested?

During a Live Data Shadow session, iCAS was tested using actual flight plans and surveillance images. Air traffic controllers worked extensively with the system and experienced it as if it were already in use. This was followed by an iSIM session, in which simulated flight scenarios were run through under controlled conditions. Both days provided important input for the further development of iCAS, both technically and operationally.

Over the past few months, we have worked extremely hard to make these tests possible.

Valuable insights

Mark van Knippenberg, COO of LVNL: ‘Over the past few months, we have worked extremely hard to make these tests possible. Colleagues from various disciplines have worked hard to bring technology and operations together in a realistic test environment. Thanks to their efforts, we have gained valuable insights that will help us to further improve iCAS.’

About iCAS

Air Traffic Control the Netherlands (LVNL) is developing iCAS, a new air traffic control system that is ready for the future. The current air traffic control system (AAA) has been safe and reliable for almost 30 years, but is now due for replacement. The new system will optimise flight routes, leading to lower fuel consumption, lower CO₂ emissions and more efficient travel for passengers. In addition, with the new air traffic control system, LVNL is aligning itself with developments in European legislation and regulations for a Single European Sky. LVNL is developing the system in collaboration with air traffic control organisations from other countries. LVNL is doing this in order to jointly improve flight routes and to share the costs of development.
