Innovation Labs

Innovation Labs (iLabs) is LVNL's new innovation hub, developed in collaboration with Delft University of Technology.

At iLabs, students research and develop and demonstrate innovative applications for air traffic control systems and procedures. These applications are demonstrated to air traffic controllers, who then provide feedback. This allows an early assessment of the potential and added value of an innovative concept. The objective of iLabs is to accelerate innovation in air traffic control.

LVNL's latest innovation hub

The starting point is that the results of the research will be applied in LVNL's future operations. The focus here is on the new iCAS air traffic control system and sustainability. The students have access to both LVNL's knowledge and data. They develop applications that support air traffic controllers in their job, such as tools that display flight information more clearly on the controllers' radar screens. They are also investigating how external influences (e.g. weather conditions) during the flight can be incorporated into the flight information and calculating how flight arrival times can be optimised using machine learning.

The students are testing these applications on the platform they have developed for this purpose. This virtual platform is a lookalike of the current air traffic control system.
