More precise flight paths for departure from Kaagbaan runway

18 May 2026

From 11 June, air traffic controllers will instruct pilots departing from the Kaagbaan runway – flying westwards towards Hoofddorp and Nieuw-Vennep or eastwards towards Kudelstaart and Rijsenhout – to always fly with a fixed turn radius. This safety measure does not alter existing routes or the number of aircraft departing from the Kaagbaan. However, more aircraft will fly using the fixed turn radius, which will result in a local shift in noise levels.

Why this adjustment?

When departing from the Kaagbaan, there are two options for aircraft flying westwards near Hoofddorp and Nieuw-Vennep and eastwards near Kudelstraat. One option is a route with a fixed turn radius that is always flown in the same way using precise systems in the cockpit.Another option is one without a fixed turn radius, where the execution depends on weather conditions and the type of aircraft. This carries the risk that an aircraft flying the departure route with a fixed turn radius could come too close to an aircraft that took off before it and is flying without a fixed turn radius.

For this reason, from 11 June, pilots will be instructed to always fly with a fixed turn radius. If an aircraft is unable to fly with a fixed turn radius, for example because it does not have the correct navigation equipment on board, the pilot must indicate this before take-off.

More modern aircraft require different safety procedures

As increasingly modern aircraft are deployed, safety measures are sometimes necessary to continue to guarantee the high safety standards of air traffic. This is why we sometimes need to adjust routes or procedures. When developing new safety measures, the starting point is to minimise the impact on the surrounding area.

We realise that this adjustment will lead to a shift in noise levels. This will result in less noise nuisance for residents in some residential areas, and more in others. Together with Schiphol, we remain committed to reducing noise nuisance from air traffic in the surrounding area. You can read more about this on our website minderhinderschiphol.nl.
