Safety measure: changes to the Polderbaan night-time departure route

18 May 2026

From 11 June 2026, the existing departure route from the Polderbaan for aircraft bound for southern destinations, taking off between 23:00 and 06:00, will be amended. After taking off from the Polderbaan, aircraft will follow an existing route, turning left at Limmen/Castricum. They will then continue along a new route over the sea in a southward direction. The aircraft will return to land near Noordwijk, at a high altitude of 6 to 7 kilometres.

Why this change?

The change is a necessary safety measure. It ensures that the risk of aircraft flying too close to one another whilst turning on the current route near Zaanstad can no longer arise.
As a result of this measure, fewer aircraft will fly over the Zaanstad/Amsterdam region at night, and more aircraft will fly over the Castricum/Limmen region. This concerns approximately 600 flights per year (two to six flights per night), if the Polder runway is in use as a take-off runway.
In this animation, we explain how the measure works (in Dutch):

More modern aircraft require different safety measures

Due to the use of increasingly modern aircraft, safety measures are sometimes necessary to continue to guarantee the high level of safety in air traffic. That is why we sometimes have to adjust routes or procedures. When developing new safety measures, the starting point is to minimise the impact on the surrounding area.

We realise that adjusting the night-time departure route leads to a shift in air traffic. For residents in some residential areas, this means more noise pollution, and for residents in other areas, less. Together with Schiphol, we remain committed to reducing noise pollution from air traffic in the surrounding area wherever possible. You can read more about this on our website minderhinderschiphol.nl
