LVNL achieves international recognition for sustainability commitment

Air Traffic Control the Netherlands (LVNL) is receiving recognition for its commitment to sustainability from the Civil Air Navigation Services Organization CANSO. This level 3 accreditation in the GreenATM programme is the result of LVNL’s commitment to the matters of innovation, efficiency and sustainability within the aviation industry. LVNL, together with the Belgian air navigation service provider skeyes, is hereby following in the footsteps of the Swiss ANSP Skyguide, which received the accreditation earlier this year.

The CANSO GreenATM programme was launched in 2022, and provides the opportunity to independently evaluate the efforts of air traffic control organisations in the field of sustainability and efficiency. ANSPs are evaluated at five levels – where 1 is the lowest score and 5 the highest – each with ambitious objectives focused on promoting sustainability and environmental management in the organisation and within the airspace for which they are responsible. To date, level 3 is the highest accreditation to have been awarded.

We are extremely proud with the GreenATM Level 3 accreditation, making LVNL one of the first ANSPs in the world to do so

Michiel van Dorst CEO LVNL

Michiel van Dorst (CEO LVNL): ‘We are extremely proud with the GreenATM Level 3 accreditation, making LVNL one of the first ANSPs in the world to do so. It's a recognition for the sustainable path we've embarked on as an organization overall and in our air traffic management. Sustainability has become increasingly important in the aviation sector and for us. Therefore we gladly take the lead in this area.’

We are honoured to award a Level 3 accreditation to LVNL in the GreenATM programme

Simon Hocquard CANSO Director General

’We are honoured to award a Level 3 accreditation to LVNL in the GreenATM programme,’ says Simon Hocquard (CANSO Director General). ’This milestone highlights the efforts made by LVNL in the field of sustainability and reflects their commitment to encouraging positive changes within different domains. Their proactive commitment to employees and users of the airspace, with tangible benefits for the environment, set an example for the sector.’

LVNL is receiving the GreenATM level 3 accreditation for components such as:

  • Performance Based Navigation
The implementation of advanced GNSS navigation technologies as represented by high levels of Performance-Based Navigation (PBN) deployment and surface movement optimisation reduced excess fuel burn in the air and on the ground.
  • Optimisation of Wake Turbulence Separation (RECAT-TBS)
LVNL’s efforts to optimise wake turbulence spacing has led to notable efficiencies in approach management at Schiphol airport resulting in less use of noise sensitive runways.
  • Minder Hinder Schiphol
LVNL started the programme ‘Minder Hinder Schiphol’ with measures to reduce nuisance. It is based on ideas not only from LVNL, Schiphol, the airlines, but also from residents and municipal government representatives.
  • Sustainable Procurement
LVNL has shown impressive progress in sustainable procurement policy and actively promotes socially responsible procurement. LVNL also monitors the efforts of suppliers to improve their sustainability.
